Update 8/29/24
My wife, Abigail, and I found out Laurie had some anatomical defects at 20 weeks, and she was diagnosed with a left side CDH and CPAM a week later. We relocated to Houston from the Rio Grande Valley on June 8th (28 weeks) because of the frequent check ups and possible maternal-fetal surgery. Thankfully, everything went smoothly during pregnancy, and we were blessed with Laurie’s arrival to the world on August 22nd.
She was placed on ECMO within an hour of birth and had her CDH repaired at a little over 24 hours old. Her strength and resilience through this delicate stage of life has been extraordinary to watch .
Laurie is currently on ECMO and trending toward getting off of it this week. We are extraordinarily thankful for the wonderful doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, patient care advocates, and everyone else at Memorial Hermann Houston involved with Laurie’s care and recovery. We thank God for the blessing of our daughter and are praying hard for her successful recovery.
Update 9/2/24
She is off of ECMO now and on the road to recovery!
Update 9/25/24
Laurie has been doing well and a lot has happened in the last month! She was taken off ECMO on August 29th, extubated on September 17th and placed on CPAP, and moved to “high flow” just yesterday! Needless to say, we are thrilled with Laurie’s progress and give all the glory to the Lord above. While her lungs continue to grow and heal, we are also praying to have her ostomy reversed in the next few weeks. We are so proud of our little Laurie and thanking God for every moment with her. The support of all of our family, friends, CHMH staff, and ECCF have helped keep our spirits high throughout it all. We are praying to be home for the holidays but still cherish every moment with her here in the NICU. We are proud of our little warrior as she continues to show her resilience.
Update 10/17/24
Laurie was thankfully discharged a couple of days ago on October 15th! We are ecstatic to have her out of there. She still has some obstacles to get through with feeding and breathing, but she is doing great overall. We will stay relocated in Houston for about a month more before making our way ALL the way home to McAllen mid-November.
